why do 1996 SAE's have so much more prem over 97 SAE'S?
It is common for 1996 silver eagles to sell for $10 more than any other year because they are the lowest mintage but why do the 1997 silver eagles sell for the same price as random eagles?
1996 SAE mintage 3,466,000 1997 SAE mintage 3,636,000 all other years are well over 4,000,000 so the difference of 170,000 should make the 97's a bit more collectable too I would think. should the 97's command about a $8 premium over other eagles? what do you think? |

These numbers don't match yours. This shows 1994 being the next lowest mintage, not counting the 95-W.
1994 4,227,319 1995 4,672,051 1995-W 30,125 1996 3,603,386 1997 4,295,004 1998 4,847,549 |

TLM,
I got them off the mint website http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/...ales&year=1996 http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/...ales&year=1997 |

OK, I guess there are some bad numbers out there.
I would trust the mints' numbers... even though I don't neccessarily trust the mint. |

http://silvereagleguide.com/mintages
"These figures are based on sales figures reported by the US Mint, which may differ from the final mintage figures when released." I don't exactly understand that statement, but it says there is a difference between the final mintage figure as released by the mint and the sales figures reported by the mint. This site does say the 1994 was the second lowest sold and 1997 was third... Why would the mintage and sales figures differ unless they remelted the unsold eagles, which I highly doubt is the case. |
Re: why do 1996 SAE's have so much more prem over 97 SAE'S?
so for collectors, the 1995-W is the coin you must have.

Someone once told me the 1996 eagles were particularly scarce because many were sent overseas.

Re: why do 1996 SAE's have so much more prem over 97 SAE'S?
Any idea on the value of a 1996 proof?
I have a couple in the mint boxes, along with a proof from 1986 (purple box). I have considered trading them for a Morgan I want. ST |

I wish I could find '96 SAEs for $10 over spot! They apparently are scarce out west; I paid $50 for one to complete a set, and that was a fair deal out here in Cali.
